PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENT

The successful new hire or rehired candidate will be responsible to complete and incur the fingerprinting and processing fee of $54.50 through an appropriate fingerprinting vendor and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, within 48 hours of offer acceptance.

RESPONSIBILITIES

SUMMARY Provide language interpretation services, primarily in Spanish, to facilitate in person/virtual communication between parents and district staff during conferences, back-to-school nights, graduations, special education meetings, and other school-related activities. Interpret spoken and written information accurately and impartially, ensuring clarity and understanding for all parties. Provide interpretation over-the-phone, during online meetings, and records messages delivered by School Messenger. Must maintain professionalism, cultural sensitivity, and confidentiality while effectively conveying educational terminology and district-specific information.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.

  • Provide expert interpretation services in a variety of modes (simultaneous, consecutive, sight translation) and modalities (in-person, phone, remote), maintaining accuracy in meaning, tone, and context.
  • Collaborate proactively with teammates and other staff to schedule, plan, and provide interpretation services for events such as parent-teacher conferences, school board meetings, and community forums.
  • Interpret in diverse settings and for various purposes (school/district events, parent-teacher conferences, enrollment, graduation, school board meetings, IEP meetings, disciplinary hearings).
  • Sight-translate written materials written in both working languages (when applicable).
  • Perform research to find and assimilate information on a broad range of topics in support of interpreting assignments.
  • Accompany staff members performing home visits to provide interpretation services.
  • Provide interpretation for recorded messages that need to be disseminated quickly (text messages, School Messenger recordings).
  • Adhere to and implement the AAITE or NAETISL National Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice for Interpreters in Education.
  • Promote student success through engagement for parent/family involvement (attendance, behavioral, and academic issues).
  • Act as an intermediary and cultural/linguistic liaison to facilitate communication for families, schools, and district departments regarding school regulations, expectations, and cultural differences.
  • Maintain a flexible schedule to accommodate school and family needs, including early morning and evening availability.
  • Maintain cultural sensitivity and professionalism while supporting effective two-way communication.
  • Maintain accurate records and calendar appointments to support compliance, team collaboration, and resource planning.
  • Log check-out and check-in of district equipment. Ensure equipment is properly secured and not left unattended. Report damaged or malfunctioning equipment promptly for repair or replacement.
  • Support emergency communication efforts as needed, including interpreting urgent announcements or notifications.
  • Participate in training and professional learning to maintain and improve interpretation skills, to stay informed about legal requirements, terminology, and district practices, and to enhance team collaboration and efficacy.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE: Minimum one year of interpreting experience preferred. Experience working with children, families, and/or community agencies preferred. Experience working in an educational setting strongly preferred.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: Minimum high school diploma or equivalent. Postsecondary coursework or professional interpreter training preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES & REGISTRATIONS: Valid Colorado driver's license and car insurance required upon hire. Obtain an interpreter training credential (e.g., The Community Interpreter International, Bridging the Gap, NCBMI, or CCHI) within 6 months of hire (if not already held).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Fluency in both English and Spanish (or other designated language), including advanced proficiency in grammar, vocabulary, and colloquial expressions. Knowledge of cultural nuances and effective communication techniques to bridge language gaps. Strong verbal communication and public speaking skills for accurate and clear interpretation in order to render a precise message. Active listening to effectively capture and convey the intended meaning of speakers. Note-taking skills to capture key points/concepts during lengthy discussions or complex topics to aid in the message. Ability to interpret accurately and impartially in both simultaneous and consecutive formats. Ability to maintain confidentiality and neutrality in all communications. Ability to work in high-pressure or emotionally charged settings (e.g., disciplinary meetings, parent-teacher conferences). Ability to adjust to unexpected events and rapidly changing circumstances.
