Entry-Level Structural Engineer – Steel Connection Design

Location: Lexington, SC |  Position Type: Full-Time |  Experience Level: Entry-Level / New Grad

Southern Steel Engineers (SSE) is hiring an entry-level structural engineer to support our growing workload of steel connection design projects.

This is an ideal opportunity for a recent civil or structural engineering graduate who’s eager to apply their skills, learn from experienced engineers, and grow into a specialized role in structural steel design.

What You’ll Do

• Assist in the analysis and design of  steel connections for a wide variety of project types across the U.S.
• Use engineering software such as  MathCAD Prime ,  IDEA StatiCa , and  Revit to support design work
• Review 3D BIM models in  Trimble Connect to assist with coordination and connection detailing
• Prepare engineering submittals, review shop drawings, and help respond to RFIs from clients and detailers
• Collaborate with internal engineers and external partners to deliver accurate, code-compliant solutions
• Contribute to the improvement of internal tools, calculation templates, and design processes

What We’re Looking For

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
• Passed or planning to take the FE exam
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Excellent attention to detail and a  logical, problem-solving mindset
• Well-organized , self-motivated, and able to manage tasks in a project-driven environment
• Eager to learn and grow technical skills through hands-on experience and mentorship
• Genuine interest in  structural steel design and building a career in engineering

Bonus Skills (Not Required)

• Familiarity with software such as  MathCAD, IDEA StatiCa, Bluebeam , or  Revit
• Basic understanding of steel design principles or exposure to  AISC standards
• Experience with Excel automation, VBA, or programming languages like Python
• Interest in process optimization, AI , or developing tools to improve engineering workflows
