Job Description

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Safety & Health Specialist is responsible for overseeing and administering safety and health programs at the Springfield, IL manufacturing facility. This role partners closely with managers and employees to promote a strong safety culture, ensure compliance with OSHA and other applicable regulations, and proactively identify and mitigate workplace risks. The Safety & Health Specialist leads safety training initiatives, responds to workplace incidents, supports medical management, and directs the accident investigation and workers’ compensation processes.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Safety Programs & Compliance:

  • Develop, prepare, and facilitate safety awareness presentations and initiatives.
  • Conduct routine safety audits and inspections; document findings, communicate results to management, and collaborate on corrective actions.
  • Coordinate, conduct, and document required OSHA inspections and compliance programs, including but not limited to:

- Lockout/Tagout

- Material Handling Equipment

- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

- Hazard Communication / Safety Data Sheets (SDS)

- Machine Safeguarding

- Fall Protection

  • Maintain all required OSHA compliance programs and ensure ongoing adherence.
  • Review existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and update or develop new procedures related to safety programs and processes.

Training & Employee Engagement :

  • Deliver safety and compliance training to employees using the company’s training platform and ensure proper documentation. Training topics may include:

- Material Handling Equipment (e.g., forklifts)

- First Aid / CPR / AED / Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP)

- Lockout/Tagout

  • Support leadership and employees in reinforcing safe work practices and behaviors.

Incident Response & Workers’ Compensation :

  • Serve as the lead responder to workplace incidents, ensuring employees receive appropriate medical attention as needed.
  • Direct the accident investigation process, including root cause analysis and corrective action development.
  • Ensure timely and accurate documentation of incidents in the EHS system and participate in follow-up activities to support closure and prevention.
  • Own and administer the Workers’ Compensation (WC) process, including:

- Filing claims and maintaining claim documentation

- Coordinating medical appointments and communicating with supervisors

- Collaborating with HR to ensure alignment and compliance

- Working with insurance carriers to manage claims effectively

  • Availability to respond to incidents or support operations after hours as needed

Reporting & Emergency Preparedness :

  • Prepare and maintain OSHA records, including OSHA 300, 301, and annual summaries.
  • Develop and distribute monthly injury frequency and safety performance scorecards.
  • Organize and maintain emergency procedures (fire, weather, medical) and manage internal emergency drills.
  • Administer DOT testing programs and driver qualification processes in collaboration with HR.

Additional Responsibilities :

  • Perform other duties as assigned to support facility safety and health objectives.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Working knowledge of OSHA regulations and safety compliance requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to lead training sessions and presentations
  • Strong collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment
