Founding Software Engineer | Los Angeles | Startup | Embedded Systems & Maritime AI

Berkley Hunt is partnering with a pioneering early-stage startup reimagining maritime logistics through next-generation vessel connectivity and autonomous operations. They’re building a unified platform that fuses embedded systems, guidance and navigation control (GNC), and advanced operator interfaces, and are looking for a Founding Software Engineer to join the core team and shape the technical foundation of their platform.

About the Role

This is a rare opportunity for an experienced software engineer to have both hands-on and strategic impact. You’ll design and develop the core software stack powering autonomous and semi-autonomous maritime operations, including real-time edge systems, operator platforms, and secure vessel communications. Responsibilities:

• Design and implement embedded software and real-time edge AI systems for maritime vessels.
• Evaluate, integrate, and manage onboard sensors to capture vessel performance and operational data.
• Develop guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) algorithms for autonomous or semi-autonomous vessel operations.
• Build operator-facing interfaces and platforms for monitoring, control, and decision-making.
• Architect RF and wireless communication systems for secure vessel-to-vessel and vessel-to-shore connectivity.
• Collaborate closely with founders, AI/ML engineers, and maritime experts to shape the technical roadmap.

Requirements:

• Strong background in software engineering, with hands-on experience in embedded or real-time systems.
• Proven experience with sensor integration, vehicle software, and guidance/navigation/control systems.
• Familiarity with RF systems and wireless communications.
• Ability to build intuitive, operator-facing UIs/platforms for complex technical systems.
• Entrepreneurial mindset and comfort wearing multiple hats, from coding to architecture-level decisions.
• Bonus: Experience with maritime vessel systems, aerospace, defense, or robotics.
• Must be based in Los Angeles/Long Beach (hybrid/flexible options possible).
